Concept
Launched in 2019, the ScenTree project set out to catalog, document, and olfactively classify all products used in the perfume industry. For each of the
761
ingredients listed on the site, a group of experts voluntarily came together to determine an olfactory classification using a predefined list of
16
families and
628
descriptors. This approach enables the creation of an innovative visualization in the form of a multi-layered tree, where each node represents an ingredient, a family or a descriptor. For each product, the descriptors are organized by order of olfactory importance. The deeper you delve into the classification, the more precise the descriptors become for a given raw material. In essence, ScenTree distinguishes ingredients from one another and highlights their olfactory similarities.
The two foundations of the project
Scentree is structured around two distinct yet complementary components: olfactory classification and the product database. The project offers free and unlimited digital access to an innovative and disruptive data visualization, as well as a comprehensive set of reliable and up-to-date technical information. Currently detailing nearly 750 products, the database aims to reach 3,500 entries by the end of 2027. Data is collected and published in close collaboration with numerous dedicated contributors working directly with the relevant products. These contributors include perfumers, sourcing specialists, botanists, chemists, international regulatory entities, and producers of aromatic plants, all carefully selected for their specific expertise..
Exploring the branches of scent
We invite you on a journey. From one descriptor to another, you will discover the ingredients that match your desired notes. For each raw material or descriptor, you can click on them to access more detailed information. Technical characteristics will be provided for the ingredients, while explanations will appear for the descriptors and olfactory families. Like any classification, subjectivity plays a significant role. Each descriptor represents a deliberate choice. We have endeavored to align these choices with the general consensus within the perfumery industry, thanks to the valuable input of our collaborators. Collaboration will always be the guiding principle of this classification.
Le concept
ScenTree’s visual layout is inspired by the LifeMap, created by Mr. De Vienne for the University of Lyon I. The concept resembles cartography, such as that used by Open Street Maps, which can be explored through zooming in and out and interacting with images.
Climb the ScenTree and join us on an adventure as we discover the stories of fragrance raw materials.
