Uses in perfumery :
Rarely used as such. Humulene-alpha is however very present in our formulas because it is a component of a large number of essential oils. It is therefore very commun to find it in the results of chromatographic analysis.

First isolated from hops, hence the name

This molecule is found in a countless number of essential oils, usually in trace amounts. Among the essential oils concerned, we find the great majority of spices, herbs, woods and citrus.

Also named alpha-caryophyllene, the alpha-humulene is an isomer of beta-caryophyllene

Synthesis route :
Alpha-humulene is a sesquiterpene. This means that it has three units of Isoprenes. Isoprene is a five carbon atoms diene, constituting a basis for the synthesis of terpenes by Diels-Alder reactions. Thus, humulene can be synthesized from isoprene, or other easily obtainable terpenes, to shorten the synthesis.
